The amphibian I am holding in the photo is either Taricha torosa (commonly called the California Newt) or Taricha rivularis (Red-Bellied Newt) but I don’t know enough to identify it positively. I saw lots of them while hiking with friends in Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve last summer. After we let this one climb on us for a while, we sent it back into the forest.
